THE question that affects your waistline

Over the last two weeks I was tempted to eat a massive amount of food via mindless grazing and snacking. I was focused on launching my online program, which is kind of like finals week in college, when you temporarily live and breathe your work while in your pajamas. But, not only did I not eat the massive amount of food, I actually lost weight.

I noticed I kept thinking about food. When I felt blocked with the material I was working on, I thought about food. When I felt stressed about a technical challenge, I thought about food. When I felt relieved from an insight, I thought about food. Food was the automatic response.

It’s Not About Willpower…

Eliminating grain and dairy will help you heal your Hashimoto’s, but willpower isn’t going to keep you from noshing on your favorite treats. Today when people see me saying no to cheese or other former delights, I often hear, “you have such willpower.” But, it has nothing to do with willpower.

Resisting cheese boils down to the very same thing that causes someone else to eat it, despite knowing it’s contributing to an inner health storm (for those of you with Hashimoto’s or similar conditions). I witnessed this a couple of weeks ago. A colleague with an autoimmune condition was told to cut grain and dairy out of her diet to help eliminate pain. As I sat across from her at dinner, she explained she “tries” to eliminate them as she ordered a meal with grain and dairy. In the next sentence she said she’s going to see yet another specialist to try to help eliminate the pain she’s experiencing.

Lifestyle Changes for a Healthy Gut & Happy Life

Our gut plays a key role in our health, as a major part of our immune system is located around our gut. Those who have adrenal fatigue, thyroid or autoimmune issues have probably learned this the hard way!

While I was diagnosed with food sensitivities years ago, I had no idea what the phrase “leaky gut,” also known as “intestinal permeability,” meant or that it could be contributing to my thyroid issues. It also explained certain symptoms I had been experiencing, such as bloating, fatigue, anxiety, food allergies, and food obsession.

You’re Not In Charge of Me, MTHFR

Were you thinking what I was thinking when I first heard MTHFR? Well, in this case MTHFR means Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase, not the swear word that I occasionally love using. But I’ll admit…if I have to have a gene mutation, having one that is nicknamed after one of my favorite profanities is pretty amazing.

I learned about this lovely acronym about a year into my journey of healing adrenal fatigue and Hashitmoto’s hypothyroiditis (autoimmune). Markers in my blood panel showed that I inherited two MTHFR mutations that were potentially contributing to the conditions within my body.

I knew my lifestyle and choices had contributed to my health issues, and I also knew I had the power to change those. Learning about MTHFR left me feeling disempowered. What the EFF was I supposed to do about genetic mutations?

Seven Ways You’re Wasting Energy and Creating Exhaustion

When I started exploring the root cause my fatigue, I explored the relationship between our body and our energy centers, or chakras, specifically the solar plexus chakra. The solar plexus is associated with personal power, ego, self-worth, confidence, accomplishment, transformation, and our ability to visualize success. Physically it’s connected to the liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach, small intestine, adrenals, mid-spine area, and pancreas.

When this area has a physical imbalance, we may experience chronic fatigue, eating disorders and more. Emotionally we may experience powerlessness, greed, doubt, anger, indecision, lack of motivation or willpower, need to control, dishonoring self, low-self esteem and fear.

Why am I so tired all the time? Life with Adrenal Fatigue

Tired in the morning (and all day really) and wired in the evening. By tired I mean absolutely exhausted. The kind of tired that you feel behind your eyes and makes you want to crawl in a cave and hide from the world so no one will ask anything from you. That’s how I’d describe what I later realized was adrenal fatigue.

Life as a Foodie with Food Intolerances

Several years ago I was told to cut gluten out of my diet related to hormone issues. As I look back on the journey, it is filled with highs, lows, struggles and laughs. Today I’m going to share a few patterns that make me laugh (now), a few tools that saved my sanity, and how this turned from feeling like punishment to feeling like a gift.

Let’s start with the early-stage patterns that make me laugh…

  1. Buy everything with a gluten free label that I see.

For a solid couple of months I bought crap that I hadn’t consumed in YEARS. OMG, Trader Joe’s has gluten free Oreos! YESSS!!! It was an exciting new world realizing there is actually SO MUCH gluten free stuff out there. Except I think I actually gained weight and felt no different from eating much more processed food than I had in years.

How did you transition to three meals per day? Below is how I found success with these practices. 8 Ways Meditation Helped Me Recover from Hashimoto Hypothyroidism, Adrenal Fatigue and Leaky Gut

Even though there were some incredible highs, like getting married, last year was one of the most challenging years of my life. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto Hypothyroiditis (hypothyroidism), adrenal exhaustion and leaky gut (candida). I went from being a vibrant, athletic, social, creative, happy person to someone who felt like she was merely surviving. The healing process ended up being long and full of many lessons and lifestyle changes.

And guess what? Meditation helped me through all stages of my recovery. Confessions of a Bacon Eating Yogi

As my second spiritual call of the evening started, the host began guiding us through a beautiful meditation. Instead of inhaling deeply, I reached my hand down to the draw and pulled out the frying pan. A few moments before, I had a choice to make: meditate or cook bacon. I had back-to-back spiritual calls and had been on the road most of the day. I was hungry and had already meditated multiple times that day. I chose bacon.
