The #1 Way Your Ego Is Sabotaging Your Meditation

Our high expectations plus the desire for instant gratification can lead to an unpleasant meditation experience. 🙁 Have you ever noticed that it’s easy to live for those peaceful moments in our meditations and begrudge the moments of struggle? While we want that instant gratification, it’s often those moments of struggle that lead to the greatest peace, if we can hang in there! Plus, a lot of amazing processes, such as stress release, occur in those moments when we want to scream and give up. In today’s vlog I talk about how our ego is creating those expectations and what you can do to release them!

Bitchy, and About to Snap (a meditation)

I want share a funny way (or embarrassing…ridiculous…genius way???) I use meditation. Many years ago, when I was still in the corporate space, I created a meditation I call “Bitchy, and About to Snap,” and it TOTALLY WORKS!

Because no matter how patient and kind you are, we all have those moments where we feel like our horns are going to prevail over our halo. And it may or may not have aaaaaanything to do with the person in front of us.

The Truth About Meditation

Everyone has heard they “should” meditate. The benefits are well known, buuuuut the image of it might be scaring you off or leaving you with some misconceptions. Normally we see the image of the peaceful yogi at sunset with a blissful facial expression. Sound familiar?

Well, while I have MOMENTS of that when I meditate, often it’s quite different. It usually starts with some racing thoughts, then I experience some emotions I’ve been avoiding. But it’s how I handle those thoughts and emotions that create the meditation experience. 🙂 In this week’s video I describe what the meditation process is actually like. Hint: It’s not about having no thoughts.

Meditation Is Like Hosting a Cocktail Party

I commonly hear, “but my mind won’t stop,” when I lead people through meditations. We have the perception that meditation is a peaceful, enjoyable experience based on the pictures we’ve seen of people doing it. But, what’s really going on inside can be a totally different story! Unknowingly a recent meditation student gave me the perfect meditation metaphor.

My Favorite Way to Boost My Energy During the Busy Workweek

I heard from several people saying, me too! It was in response to an email I sent last week. In it I described the cycle I experienced energetically while I was in the corporate space. I’d start off my Mondays feeling energetic, eating healthy, refraining from office temptations (like gossip and sweets) and somehow by Friday find myself feeling depleted, exhausted and nibbling on sweets and gossip. Naturally I didn’t like that pattern and started experimenting with ways to feel energetic throughout the week.

At first I focused on what I thought I could change while I was at work, only to realize it was something that I did outside of work that positively affected my energy and enabled me to stick to my spiritual and well-being practices throughout the week.

Anxiety, Sleeping Pills and a Free Meditation

I needed a refill on my sleeping pills. I’d never been a good sleeper and in my mid-twenties found relief through sleeping pills. When I was 29 my PCP was on maternity leave, so I went to see the woman covering for her. Instead of granting my request, she turned to me and said, “Clearly you have anxiety” and suggested anxiety medication. I thought she was bat sh*t crazy but played along with it, fully intending to see my regular doctor as soon as she was back. I just wanted the sleeping pills.
